Severity categories include: - Dry bites (no venom injected) - do not require antivenom - Mild envenomation - slight bleeding, pain, and swelling at the bite site - Moderate envenomation - severe pain, swelling of the whole limb, and general illness - Severe envenomation - severe pain and swelling, breathing difficulties, moderate to severe bleeding, and shock[4][10] ## Side Effects and Complications Potential side effects of antivenom serum include: - Serum sickness (delayed reaction occurring days or weeks after treatment) - Shortness of breath - Allergic reactions including anaphylaxis - Rash, itching, wheezing - Rapid heart rate, fever, and body aches[1][4][10] ## Production Advancements Due to the high cost and short shelf life of traditional antibody-based antivenoms, alternative production methods are being explored: - Bacterial production systems - Development of targeted synthetic drugs - Purification techniques using caprylic acid instead of ammonium sulfate precipitation, which can improve purity and reduce adverse reactions[1][5] Antivenom remains the only effective treatment option for many dangerous animal envenomations, making it an essential medication on the World Health Organization's List of Essential Medicines[1].
