Overview

Antiviral lactobacilli throat spray is an investigational microbiome therapy developed by the University Hospital, Antwerp. [3, 5] It consists of a throat spray containing three selected strains of Lactobacillaceae, a type of probiotic bacteria, with known broad antiviral properties. [3, 6] The therapy is being studied for its potential to reduce the symptoms and severity of COVID-19 in outpatients with mild to moderate symptoms and to prevent the transmission of the SARS-CoV-2 virus. [2, 6] The proposed mechanism involves modulating the respiratory tract microbiome to inhibit viral infection and disease progression through various actions, including direct antiviral activity and enhancement of the epithelial barrier.
