Overview

Antiviral lozenge is a biological medicinal product developed by the Beijing Incuris Biological Products Research Institute, containing recombinant human interferon alfa-2b as its active ingredient. It is specifically formulated as a lozenge for the treatment of acute upper respiratory tract infections (URTI) and the common cold. The drug functions by delivering interferon alfa-2b directly to the oral and pharyngeal mucosa. Upon dissolution, the interferon binds to the type I interferon receptors (IFNAR1 and IFNAR2) on the surface of mucosal cells, activating the JAK-STAT signaling pathway. This activation induces the transcription of interferon-stimulated genes (ISGs), which produce proteins that inhibit viral replication, degrade viral RNA, and enhance the local immune response. By targeting the site of viral entry and replication in the upper respiratory tract, the antiviral lozenge aims to reduce viral load and alleviate symptoms such as sore throat, cough, and nasal congestion. The product is approved in China for these indications and has undergone Phase III clinical trials to further evaluate its efficacy in treating the common cold.
