Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Antox (also referred to as Antox version 1.2) is an oral multi-ingredient antioxidant preparation developed by Pharma Nord for the management of pain in chronic pancreatitis. The formulation is a combination of selenium, beta-carotene, d-alpha-tocopherol acetate (vitamin E), ascorbic acid (vitamin C), and the amino acid methionine. It is designed to act broadly as an antioxidant, targeting oxidative stress and reactive oxygen species (ROS) that are hypothesized to contribute to pancreatic damage and pain in chronic pancreatitis. While early crossover trials suggested some quality-of-life benefits, the larger randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled ANTICIPATE trial demonstrated that Antox did not significantly reduce pain or improve quality of life in patients with predominantly alcoholic chronic pancreatitis, despite successfully increasing blood antioxidant levels.
