Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Antrodia cinnamomea is a medicinal mushroom endemic to Taiwan, long used in traditional medicine and recently studied for its diverse bioactive metabolites, including triterpenoids, benzenoids, ubiquinones, polysaccharides, and acids. Its extracts demonstrate immunomodulatory, anticancer, anti-inflammatory, hepatoprotective, antidiabetic, antioxidant, cholesterol-lowering, and neuroprotective effects. Mechanisms of action are multifactorial and include modulation of the AMPK/Sirt1/SREBP-1c/PPARγ pathway (hepatoprotection), inhibition of PI3K/AKT/mTOR (anticancer/autophagy), α-glucosidase inhibition (antidiabetic effects), suppression of inflammatory mediators (NF-κB, MAPK inhibition), and immunomodulation via enhanced T-cell activation. Antrodia cinnamomea is used as a dietary supplement or “nutraceutical,” with emerging clinical evidence for hepatoprotection, cholesterol-lowering, and antihypertensive effects, and ongoing research for adjunctive therapy in cancer and metabolic disease[1][2][3][4].
