ANX776 is a fluorescently labeled form of the human protein annexin V (also referred to as annexin A5), developed as an intravenous imaging agent for the detection of apoptotic (dying) and stressed retinal cells in vivo. It binds specifically to phosphatidylserine exposed on the surface of apoptosing cells, allowing their visualization using confocal scanning laser ophthalmoscopy. This technology, known as DARC (Detection of Apoptosing Retinal Cells), enables real-time, high-resolution imaging of individual dying retinal ganglion cells in conditions such as glaucoma, age-related macular degeneration (AMD), optic neuritis, and Down’s syndrome. The primary use is diagnostic—to identify early neurodegeneration before functional vision loss occurs and to monitor disease progression or therapeutic response[2][6][7].
