Drug intelligence / Profile preview
AP-Cannabinoids is a gastro-retentive, controlled-release oral formulation of cannabinoids developed by Intec Pharma using its proprietary Accordion Pill (AP) technology. The platform consists of a multi-layered, biodegradable film containing the active pharmaceutical ingredients—typically cannabidiol (CBD) and tetrahydrocannabinol (THC)—which is folded into a standard-size capsule. Upon reaching the stomach, the pill unfolds and is retained in the gastric cavity for several hours, allowing for continuous release and improved bioavailability of the cannabinoids, which otherwise have poor and erratic absorption profiles. The program was primarily targeted at treating chronic pain conditions such as low back pain and fibromyalgia.
