Overview

AP39 is a mitochondria-targeting hydrogen sulfide (H2S) donor. It consists of a triphenylphosphonium motif linked to an H2S-donating moiety (dithiolethione). AP39 increases intracellular H2S levels, which can protect against ischemia/reperfusion injury and has been shown to induce weight loss by reducing fatty liver and obesity in mice fed a high-fat diet. It also acts as a photosensitizer and thioredoxin inhibitor.
