Overview

Apatinib is a small molecule tyrosine kinase inhibitor that selectively targets vascular endothelial growth factor receptor-2 (VEGFR-2) to inhibit tumor angiogenesis. In this specific therapeutic regimen, it is combined with fluorouracil (an antimetabolite) and platinum-based chemotherapy (DNA cross-linking agents) to treat recurrent or metastatic esophageal squamous cell carcinoma. This combination therapy is designed to provide synergistic effects by inhibiting tumor blood vessel growth while simultaneously inducing cytotoxic damage to cancer cells. The regimen is currently being evaluated in Phase 2 clinical trials sponsored by The First Affiliated Hospital of Anhui Medical University, with apatinib originally developed by Jiangsu Hengrui Medicine.
