APD-209

APD‑209 is a trisialic acid compound developed as an antiviral medication for the treatment and prevention of epidemic keratoconjunctivitis (EKC), a contagious eye disease caused by adenovirus infection. The drug was formulated as an eye drop and designed to block virus particles in the early stages of infection by mimicking sialic acid structures that serve as coreceptors for viral entry into host cells. This mechanism aimed to neutralize and inhibit adenovirus types that use sialic acid for binding and entry. APD‑209 completed phase 2 clinical trials but did not achieve statistically significant results due to insufficient patient numbers; development was subsequently discontinued.
