Overview

aPDT + doxycycline is a combination therapy that utilizes antimicrobial photodynamic therapy (aPDT) alongside the antibiotic doxycycline. aPDT is a local, painless antimicrobial treatment that involves applying photosensitizing compounds which, when activated by light, generate reactive oxygen species (ROS) that cause oxidative damage to microbial cells. Doxycycline is a tetracycline antibiotic that works by inhibiting bacterial protein synthesis. The combination appears to be particularly effective in treating periodontal disease in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus, showing improvements in both periodontal clinical parameters and glycemic control (HbA1c levels). Studies suggest that aPDT may serve as an alternative to systemic antibiotics when used in conjunction with scaling and root planing (SRP), potentially reducing concerns about antibiotic resistance.
