Overview

Apecotrep (BI 764198) is an investigational, potential first-in-class, oral, once-daily, non-immunosuppressive small molecule inhibitor of the transient receptor potential channel 6 (TRPC6). Developed by Boehringer Ingelheim, it targets TRPC6 ion channels that are believed to be overactivated on podocytes, the specialized cells responsible for kidney filtration. By inhibiting these channels, apecotrep aims to reduce podocyte injury and loss, thereby decreasing proteinuria and slowing the progression of kidney failure. It is primarily being developed for the treatment of primary focal segmental glomerulosclerosis (FSGS) and other proteinuric kidney diseases. The drug has received Breakthrough Therapy Designation from China's CDE and Orphan Drug Designations from the European Medicines Agency (EMA) and Japan's MHLW.
