Overview

ApexCal is a creamy, radiopaque calcium hydroxide paste used as a temporary disinfectant dressing during root canal therapy. Developed and manufactured by Ivoclar Vivadent, it is primarily indicated for the treatment of pulp necrosis and apical periodontitis. The paste maintains a high alkaline environment (pH approximately 12.5) through the sustained release of hydroxyl ions, which provides potent antimicrobial activity against endodontic pathogens and promotes the formation of secondary dentin and hard tissue (apexification). It contains bismuth carbonate as a radiopacifier to allow for radiographic monitoring during treatment. ApexCal is typically applied topically into the root canal after cleaning and shaping and is removed prior to permanent obturation.
