Overview

Apheresis granulocyte transfusion is a blood-derived cell therapy consisting of concentrated granulocytes (primarily neutrophils) collected from a donor via leukapheresis. It is primarily indicated for the treatment or prevention of life-threatening bacterial or fungal infections in patients with severe, prolonged neutropenia, such as those undergoing intensive chemotherapy or hematopoietic stem cell transplantation. To ensure adequate cell yields, donors are typically pre-stimulated with granulocyte colony-stimulating factor (G-CSF) and corticosteroids. As a blood-bank-derived product, it lacks a single commercial developer or brand name and is often prepared on an as-needed basis. Its clinical efficacy remains a subject of debate due to challenges in achieving therapeutic doses and the lack of definitive randomized controlled trial evidence.
