Overview

Aphthogel is a botanical mucoadhesive film containing licorice (*Glycyrrhiza glabra*) extract, developed by the Isfahan University of Medical Sciences and manufactured by Dr. Saniee Pharmaceutical Company. It is specifically indicated for the treatment and management of radiotherapy-induced oral mucositis in patients with head and neck cancer. The active licorice component functions as a demulcent and anti-inflammatory agent, providing a protective physical barrier over mucosal ulcers while reducing pain and inflammation. Clinical studies have demonstrated its efficacy in reducing the severity of radiation-induced oral mucositis and associated pain, showing comparable or superior results to standard treatments like triamcinolone acetonide films. The film is applied locally to the oral mucosa, where it adheres to provide localized delivery of its botanical active ingredients.
