Apical membrane antigen 1 (AMA1) is a highly conserved protein found on the surface of Plasmodium species, including Plasmodium falciparum and Plasmodium vivax. It plays an essential role in the invasion of host erythrocytes by malaria parasites during the blood stage of infection. AMA1 binds to rhoptry neck protein 2 (RON2), facilitating parasite entry into red blood cells. Because of its critical function and conservation across strains, AMA1 has been a major target for antimalarial drug discovery as well as vaccine development. Inhibitors or antibodies targeting AMA1 can block parasite invasion and have shown protective efficacy in preclinical studies. Several recombinant vaccines based on AMA1 have undergone clinical trials, demonstrating immunogenicity and safety[2][3][5].
