Overview

Apigenin-coated gold nanoparticles (Api-AuNPs) are an experimental therapeutic nanomaterial consisting of gold nanoparticles synthesized using the plant-derived flavonoid apigenin (4',5,7-trihydroxyflavone) as both a reducing and capping agent. This 'green synthesis' approach results in nanoparticles typically ranging from 19 to 90 nm in size. The compound is primarily investigated in preclinical academic research for its potential in oncology and cardioprotection. In cancer models, including colorectal, breast, and cholangiocarcinoma, Api-AuNPs induce apoptosis by modulating the Bax/Bcl-2 ratio and activating Caspase-3. Additionally, they have shown efficacy in reducing doxorubicin-induced cardiotoxicity by mitigating oxidative stress and inflammatory markers. The gold core also enables applications in photothermal therapy, where the particles convert light into heat to ablate tumor cells.
