Overview

Apiole is a phenylpropanoid compound naturally occurring in parsley (*Petroselinum crispum*) seeds and essential oil. It has historically been used as an emmenagogue and abortifacient. In modern research, it is investigated for its ability to reverse multidrug resistance (MDR) in cancer cells by acting as an inhibitor of the P-glycoprotein (P-gp) efflux pump. It also functions as a calcium channel inhibitor. Studies suggest it can synergistically enhance the efficacy of chemotherapeutic agents like doxorubicin and vincristine by preventing their efflux from tumor cells, thereby increasing their antiproliferative response.
