Overview

Apixaban is an oral, direct, and highly selective small molecule inhibitor of coagulation factor Xa (FXa), used as an anticoagulant. It works by inhibiting both free and bound forms of factor Xa as well as prothrombinase, independent of antithrombin III, thereby preventing the formation of thrombi. Apixaban is primarily indicated for the prevention of stroke and systemic embolism in patients with nonvalvular atrial fibrillation, treatment and prevention of deep vein thrombosis (DVT) and pulmonary embolism (PE), including after hip or knee replacement surgery. It was developed by Bristol Myers Squibb in collaboration with Pfizer and was first approved by the FDA in 2012[1][2][3][4][5].
