Drug intelligence / Profile preview
The transdermal anticoagulant (apixaban transdermal patch) is a sustained-release transdermal formulation of the direct factor Xa inhibitor apixaban, co-developed by InteguRx Therapeutics and Bionex Pharmaceuticals. Apixaban is a small molecule anticoagulant that selectively and reversibly inhibits coagulation factor Xa (both free and clot-bound), preventing the conversion of prothrombin to thrombin and subsequent fibrin clot formation. By utilizing InteguRx's proprietary skin penetration enhancement system, the transdermal patch is designed to deliver relatively constant therapeutic levels of apixaban to the circulation over a 3-to-7-day period. This continuous delivery aims to eliminate the twice-daily plasma concentration peaks associated with oral dosing, potentially reducing the risk of major hemorrhagic adverse events (such as gastrointestinal bleeding and hemorrhagic strokes) while improving patient compliance. The program is currently in preclinical development for the prevention of stroke and systemic embolism in patients with non-valvular atrial fibrillation and for the treatment of thrombosis.
