Drug intelligence / Profile preview
APL-1400 is an investigational, long-acting formulation of the complement component 3 (C3) inhibitor pegcetacoplan, developed by Apellis Pharmaceuticals (acquired by Biogen). It is designed as a sustained-release delivery system, such as an intravitreal implant or a highly concentrated solution, to treat geographic atrophy (GA) secondary to age-related macular degeneration (AMD). By inhibiting C3, the drug prevents the activation of the complement cascade, thereby reducing the inflammatory processes that drive the progression of retinal lesions. APL-1400 aims to significantly extend the interval between treatments compared to the monthly or bi-monthly dosing required for the first-generation product, SYFOVRE, thereby reducing the treatment burden for patients and improving long-term compliance.
