APL-1501 is an extended-release, orally administered small molecule drug developed as a second-generation derivative of APL-1202. It functions as an inhibitor of methionine aminopeptidase 2 (MetAP2), an enzyme involved in protein synthesis and cellular proliferation. MetAP2 is upregulated in certain tumor cell types and plays a key role in angiogenesis, proliferation, and survival. By inhibiting MetAP2, APL-1501 may exert antineoplastic effects and has also been investigated for antibacterial activity. The drug was designed to improve oral bioavailability through prodrug modification compared to its predecessor[1][2][4]. APL-1501 is being developed primarily for urinary tract infections (UTIs) with phase I clinical trials completed or terminated; it has also been explored preclinically for solid tumors, bladder cancer, and urogenital cancers but without recent development progress[2]. The extended-release formulation aims to enhance patient compliance and pharmacokinetic properties compared to immediate-release versions.
