Apligraf is a bioengineered, bi-layered living skin substitute composed of human keratinocytes and fibroblasts within a Type I bovine collagen matrix. It is designed to treat chronic, non-healing wounds by providing a scaffold and living cells that secrete essential cytokines and growth factors to stimulate the patient's own healing process. Developed by Organogenesis, it is FDA-approved for the treatment of venous leg ulcers (VLUs) and diabetic foot ulcers (DFUs) that have not responded to standard therapy. The product is manufactured in a specialized facility in Canton, Massachusetts, and functions as a living cell-based environment that promotes tissue regeneration.
