Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Aplisol is a sterile aqueous solution of Tuberculin Purified Protein Derivative (PPD) used for the Mantoux skin test to detect infection with *Mycobacterium tuberculosis*. Developed by JHP Pharmaceuticals (now part of Par Pharmaceutical), it contains antigens derived from *M. tuberculosis* cultures. Upon intradermal administration, it elicits a delayed-type hypersensitivity (DTH) reaction in individuals with cellular immunity to the pathogen, typically manifesting as induration at the injection site within 48 to 72 hours. Clinical studies by JHP Pharmaceuticals have focused on establishing the equivalence of new production batches of Aplisol against the PPD-S2 reference standard to ensure consistent potency and specificity in diagnostic settings.
