Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Apo-lactoferrin is the iron-depleted form of lactoferrin, a multifunctional glycoprotein naturally found in mammalian milk (especially colostrum) and mucosal secretions. Characterized by an iron saturation level of less than 5%, apo-lactoferrin possesses a high affinity for free ferric iron (Fe3+) and heme, allowing it to act as an iron chelator and regulator. This iron-sequestering capability underlies its potent antimicrobial, antioxidant, and anti-inflammatory properties, as it starves pathogens of essential iron and prevents iron-induced oxidative stress and ferroptosis. Apo-lactoferrin is widely utilized as a dietary supplement for immune support, gut health, and iron regulation (such as managing mild anemia). Additionally, it has been investigated in clinical and preclinical settings for various therapeutic applications, including oncology (as the recombinant human form talactoferrin), sepsis, and inflammatory conditions like rheumatoid arthritis, where apo-lactoferrin microsponges are being developed to mitigate joint destruction by scavenging free heme and suppressing ferroptosis.
