Overview

Apo-TriAvir is a fixed-dose combination (FDC) antiretroviral medication developed by Apotex Inc. for the treatment of HIV/AIDS. It contains three active pharmaceutical ingredients: zidovudine (300 mg), lamivudine (150 mg), and nevirapine (200 mg). Zidovudine and lamivudine are nucleoside reverse transcriptase inhibitors (NRTIs) that act as chain terminators during viral DNA synthesis, while nevirapine is a non-nucleoside reverse transcriptase inhibitor (NNRTI) that binds allosterically to the reverse transcriptase enzyme. This combination therapy is designed to simplify treatment regimens and improve patient adherence in resource-limited settings. Apo-TriAvir gained international recognition as the first drug produced and exported under Canada's Access to Medicines Regime (CAMR), a legislative framework implementing the WTO's "Paragraph 6" decision to facilitate the export of generic medicines to developing countries.
