Overview

Apocynin, also known as acetovanillone, is a naturally occurring methoxy-substituted catechol isolated from various plant sources. It is experimentally used as an inhibitor of NADPH oxidase, which plays a key role in the production of reactive oxygen species (ROS) by activated neutrophils and macrophages. Apocynin exerts anti-inflammatory and antioxidant effects by inhibiting the assembly of the NADPH oxidase complex, thereby reducing ROS production. It has been investigated for its potential therapeutic effects in conditions such as bronchial asthma, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), arthritis, bowel disease, atherosclerosis, familial ALS (amyotrophic lateral sclerosis), and neuroprotection in models of stroke and Parkinson's disease[2][3][5]. In traditional medicine (e.g., Ayurveda), it has been used to treat heart problems and diseases[8].
