Drug intelligence / Profile preview
APOHEALTH Effervescent Electrolyte Tablets is an oral rehydration therapy formulated to replace water and essential electrolytes lost due to vomiting, diarrhoea, heavy sweating, vigorous exercise, or excess alcohol consumption. The formulation contains a balanced mixture of citric acid, glucose, potassium chloride, sodium bicarbonate, and sodium chloride. It works by exploiting the sodium-glucose cotransport mechanism in the small intestine, mediated by the sodium/glucose cotransporter 1 (SGLT1) protein. The co-transport of sodium and glucose across the intestinal epithelium creates an osmotic gradient that rapidly pulls water into the bloodstream, facilitating efficient rehydration. Developed by Arrotex Pharmaceuticals (originally under Apotex), this over-the-counter product is approved in Australia for the prevention and treatment of dehydration.
