**Apohemoglobin-haptoglobin** is an investigational two-protein biologic complex comprising apohemoglobin, a heme-depleted hemoglobin protein that binds free heme, and haptoglobin, a hemoglobin-binding plasma protein that supports clearance of cell-free hemoglobin. The complex is designed to simultaneously scavenge acellular hemoglobin and heme released during intravascular hemolysis, thereby reducing hemoglobin- and heme-driven vasoconstriction, oxidative stress, endothelial activation, inflammation, microvascular stasis, and vaso-occlusion. It has shown preclinical activity in mouse models of sickle cell disease and beta-thalassemia, including improvements in microvascular blood flow and cardiovascular parameters. Development reported publicly is preclinical and associated with University of California San Diego and The Ohio State University research groups.
