Drug intelligence / Profile preview
APONVIE (aprepitant) is an intravenous injectable emulsion formulation of the substance P/neurokinin-1 (NK1) receptor antagonist, developed by Heron Therapeutics. It is specifically indicated for the prevention of postoperative nausea and vomiting (PONV) in adults. Delivered as a 30-second intravenous infusion, APONVIE provides rapid achievement of therapeutic drug levels and is bioequivalent to oral aprepitant. It utilizes a proprietary surfactant-free, polysorbate 80-free formulation, which is the same as Heron's CINVANTI (indicated for chemotherapy-induced nausea and vomiting). By blocking the NK1 receptor, it inhibits the binding of substance P, a key mediator in the emetic pathway, particularly in the area postrema of the brain.
