ApoptiCIDe is a proprietary gene therapy platform developed by Phoenix SENOLYTIX (a subsidiary of Gerotherapeutix) designed for the purposeful elimination of specific cell populations, such as senescent cells, to treat aging-related conditions and improve healthspan. The technology utilizes a controllable "cell elimination switch" based on an inducible caspase-9 (iCasp9) system, originally developed as CaspaCIDe by Bellicum Pharmaceuticals. The platform works through chemically induced dimerization (CID), where the administration of the small-molecule dimerizer rimiducid (reformulated as PTC-1202) triggers the dimerization and activation of the caspase-9 fusion protein, leading to rapid apoptosis in cells expressing the gene therapy construct. The lead candidate, ApoptiCIDe-CE-GERO-002, is a senolytic gene therapy intended to eliminate senescent cells throughout the body, while other variants like ApoptiCIDe-CE-WAT-001 target adipocytes for obesity-related conditions.
