Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Apple pectin is a complex polysaccharide and soluble dietary fiber extracted from apples. It is not absorbed by the body but exerts its effects within the gastrointestinal tract. As a dietary fiber, it forms a gel-like substance that can increase feelings of satiety, slow gastric emptying, and reduce the absorption of fats and sugars, thereby aiding in weight management and blood sugar control. Apple pectin also functions as a prebiotic, promoting the growth of beneficial gut bacteria. Fermentation of pectin by the gut microbiota produces short-chain fatty acids (SCFAs), such as butyrate, acetate, and propionate. These SCFAs contribute to gut health, modulate the immune system, and may help alleviate obesity and related metabolic disorders. A clinical trial is investigating its effects on metabolically associated fatty liver disease.
