Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Aplona is an oral antidiarrheal medication developed by Athenstaedt, containing dried apple powder as its active ingredient. It is indicated for the symptomatic treatment of acute, non-specific diarrhea in both adults and children. The therapeutic effect is primarily attributed to the high pectin content of the apple powder. Pectins are complex polysaccharides that act as adsorbents, binding bacterial toxins and excess fluid in the gastrointestinal tract. Additionally, they form a protective gel-like layer over the intestinal mucosa, which helps soothe inflammation and normalize bowel movements. Aplona is formulated as a granulate that is typically stirred into water or tea before consumption.
