APR002 is an investigational small molecule antiviral agent developed by the Global Health Drug Discovery Institute (GHDDI) for the treatment and prevention of COVID-19. It is specifically designed for administration via inhalation, targeting the respiratory system directly to inhibit viral replication at the primary site of infection. APR002 acts as a potent inhibitor of the SARS-CoV-2 3C-like protease (3CLpro), also known as the main protease (Mpro), which is an essential enzyme for processing viral polyproteins into functional units. By blocking this enzyme, APR002 prevents the virus from replicating. The inhaled delivery method is intended to achieve high local drug concentrations in the lungs while minimizing systemic exposure, potentially improving the safety and efficacy profile compared to systemic antiviral treatments.
