Overview

Apramycin is a structurally unique aminoglycoside antibiotic produced by *Streptomyces tenebrarius* and primarily used in veterinary medicine[4][5]. It exhibits bactericidal activity against a broad range of gram-negative bacteria, including *Escherichia coli*, *Klebsiella pneumoniae*, and *Pseudomonas aeruginosa*[4][5]. The drug acts by binding to the bacterial 30S ribosomal subunit (specifically the 16S rRNA), causing misreading of mRNA and inhibiting protein synthesis, which leads to both errors in translation and reduced efficiency of protein production[4][5][7]. This dual mechanism underlies its potent bactericidal effect. While widely approved for use in animals (cattle, pigs, chickens) for gastrointestinal infections such as colibacillosis and salmonellosis, apramycin is not approved for human use[1][2][4][5].
