Overview

Apricitabine is an experimental small molecule nucleoside reverse transcriptase inhibitor (NRTI) developed for the treatment of HIV infection. It is a cytidine analogue structurally related to lamivudine and emtricitabine. Apricitabine acts by blocking the activity of HIV reverse transcriptase, thereby inhibiting viral replication. It has demonstrated antiviral activity against both wild-type and drug-resistant strains of HIV, including those with mutations conferring resistance to other NRTIs such as M184V and thymidine analogue mutations (TAMs). The drug was investigated in both treatment-naive and treatment-experienced patients, showing efficacy in reducing plasma viral load. Despite reaching Phase III clinical trials, development was discontinued in 2016 due to lack of funding and interest[1][2][3][5][7].
