Overview

Apricot kernel is the edible seed found inside the pit of the apricot fruit (*Prunus armeniaca*). It contains several bioactive compounds, most notably amygdalin (also called laetrile or "vitamin B17"), which can be converted in the body to cyanide—a toxic substance. Apricot kernels have been used in traditional medicine, especially in Chinese medicine as 杏仁 (Xing Ren), primarily for respiratory conditions such as cough and asthma, and to moisten the bowels for constipation. In modern alternative health circles, they have been promoted—without scientific support—as a cancer remedy due to their amygdalin content. However, clinical evidence does not support efficacy against cancer and there are significant safety concerns due to cyanide toxicity. Apricot kernels also contain antioxidants, fatty acids (notably oleic and linoleic acid), vitamins E and A, fiber, protein, minerals like potassium and iron, and other phytochemicals that may contribute antioxidant or anti-inflammatory effects. Topically or as oil extracts they are used for skin care due to emollient properties[1][4][5][6][7][8].
