Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Aprise is a brand of cyproheptadine, a first-generation antihistamine with significant antiserotonergic and anticholinergic properties. Manufactured by Emcee Pharmaceuticals, it is primarily formulated as a 2mg syrup. The drug functions by antagonizing H1 histamine receptors to alleviate allergic symptoms such as sneezing, itching, and watery eyes. Additionally, its potent antagonism of 5-HT2 serotonin receptors in the hypothalamus makes it an effective appetite stimulant, used clinically to treat undernutrition, malnutrition, and failure to thrive. Due to its ability to cross the blood-brain barrier, common side effects include sedation, drowsiness, and dizziness. It is typically used with caution in patients with hepatic or renal impairment.
