Overview

**aprotinin + favipiravir** is a combination of aprotinin, a nonspecific serine protease inhibitor, and favipiravir, an antiviral drug that inhibits viral RNA-dependent RNA polymerase. Aprotinin acts by inhibiting cellular proteases such as transmembrane serine protease 2 (TMPRSS2), trypsin, chymotrypsin, plasmin, and kallikrein, thereby preventing viral entry, dampening inflammation, and modulating coagulation and fibrinolysis in the host[1][2][4]. Favipiravir disrupts viral replication by targeting the viral RNA polymerase, limiting production of viral RNA and propagation of the virus[1][3]. Their combination has demonstrated synergistic effects in preclinical and early clinical studies for reducing viral load and improving outcomes in moderate COVID-19 and influenza pneumonia[1][3][5]. The combo is under clinical investigation in Russia and select regions as a potential therapy for COVID-19 and other viral pneumonias[1][3][5].
