Overview

APSE-Aq is an aqueous fraction derived from the plant *Aspidosperma pyrifolium*, specifically identified as a glycosylated derivative of benzoic acid. It has demonstrated neuroprotective, antioxidant, and anti-inflammatory properties in preclinical models of Parkinson's disease. In rat studies using 6-hydroxydopamine (6-OHDA) striatal lesions, oral administration of APSE-Aq resulted in a partial recovery of behavioral changes and a significant reversal of the depletion of striatal dopamine and its metabolites. Its mechanism of action involves the reduction of oxidative stress markers, such as lipid peroxidation and nitrite levels, and the preservation of dopaminergic markers including tyrosine hydroxylase (TH) and the dopamine transporter (DAT). Additionally, APSE-Aq exhibits anti-inflammatory effects by modulating TNF-alpha levels. Chemically related to salicylic acid, it is being investigated for its potential therapeutic application in neurodegenerative disorders.
