Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Aptamer I8 is a host-directed DNA aptamer developed by researchers at the University of Milan. It is designed to target intercellular adhesion molecule-1 (ICAM-1) on host airway epithelial cells, specifically masking the conserved domain involved in host-virus interactions. By blocking the binding of human rhinoviruses (HRVs) to ICAM-1, Aptamer I8 acts as an entry inhibitor to prevent viral replication and subsequent infection. It is being investigated for the prevention and treatment of HRV infections, particularly to prevent rhinovirus-driven acute exacerbations in patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD).
