Aptiganel, also known by its code name CNS 1102 and brand name Cerestat, is a small molecule drug candidate that functions as a selective, noncompetitive antagonist of the N-methyl-D-aspartate (NMDA) receptor. Specifically, it acts on the ion channel associated with the NMDA receptor. Developed by Cambridge NeuroScience, Inc., Aptiganel was investigated for its neuroprotective properties, particularly in the treatment of acute ischemic stroke and traumatic brain injury. Despite demonstrating neuroprotective effects in animal models, human clinical trials revealed limited efficacy and significant undesirable side effects, including increases in systolic blood pressure, sedation, and hallucinations. Consequently, its clinical development was discontinued.
