APZ001 is a monoclonal antibody and a biosimilar candidate of cetuximab, developed by Foshan Amprozyme Biopharmaceutical. It targets the epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR), a transmembrane protein that plays a critical role in cell signaling pathways regulating growth and survival. By binding to the extracellular domain of EGFR, APZ001 competitively inhibits the binding of ligands such as epidermal growth factor (EGF) and transforming growth factor-alpha (TGF-α). This action blocks the activation of downstream signaling cascades, including the MAPK and PI3K/Akt pathways, which are often overactive in various cancers. APZ001 is primarily being developed for the treatment of metastatic colorectal cancer (mCRC) and is currently undergoing clinical evaluation to demonstrate its pharmacokinetic equivalence, safety, and immunogenicity compared to the reference product, Erbitux.
