Drug intelligence / Profile preview
AQ001S is a novel aqueous formulation of budesonide for inhalation via nebulization, developed by Aquilon Pharmaceuticals. Unlike traditional budesonide suspensions, AQ001S uses a proprietary excipient (HP-Betadex) to solubilize budesonide in water, enabling delivery as a true solution suitable for vibrating mesh nebulizers. This approach aims to improve the consistency and efficacy of drug delivery compared to suspensions and may allow for lower effective doses due to enhanced bioavailability. The primary indication is asthma; clinical trials have demonstrated linear pharmacokinetics and favorable safety profiles in adults with mild asthma. Preclinical studies suggest that the HP-Betadex complex increases anti-inflammatory efficacy compared to standard formulations at equivalent or lower doses[1][2][3][4][5][6][7].
