Overview

Aquaftem is a perfluorocarbon-based emulsion designed to enhance oxygen delivery to tissues. Originally derived from the "Perftoran" blood substitute technology developed in the Soviet Union, Aquaftem is primarily utilized in topical and cosmetic applications to improve skin oxygenation, accelerate wound healing, and enhance the penetration of other active ingredients. The mechanism of action relies on the high gas-solubility of perfluorocarbons, such as perfluorodecalin and perfluoromethylcyclohexylpiperidine, which act as physical carriers for oxygen and carbon dioxide. These compounds facilitate gas exchange at the cellular level by dissolving atmospheric oxygen and releasing it into the hypoxic environment of the skin or wound bed. It is most notably associated with the Russian company Faberlic, which integrated the technology into its "oxygen cosmetics" line for anti-aging and restorative purposes.
