Overview

Aquamin is a natural multi-mineral product derived from the calcified red seaweed *Lithothamnion calcareum*. It is rich in calcium and magnesium, along with 72 additional trace minerals. Research led by James Varani at the University of Michigan has demonstrated that Aquamin enhances gastrointestinal barrier function by upregulating the expression of tight junction proteins, such as occludin and claudin-1, and by promoting the differentiation of intestinal epithelial cells. This mechanism is thought to reduce gastrointestinal permeability, a key factor in inflammatory bowel diseases and functional GI disorders. Aquamin is currently being evaluated in Phase 2 clinical trials for its efficacy in reducing gut permeability and inflammation in patients with ulcerative colitis and irritable bowel syndrome with diarrhea (IBS-D).
