Overview

Aquaphilus dolomiae extract is a postbiotic biotechnological extract derived from a unique non-pathogenic, Gram-negative bacterium found in Avène Thermal Spring Water. Developed by Pierre Fabre, this extract is a key active ingredient in dermocosmetic formulations (such as the Avène XeraCalm A.D and Cicalfate+ lines) designed to treat inflammatory skin conditions. It exhibits a multi-pronged mechanism of action: it improves skin barrier function by restoring filaggrin expression and strengthening tight junctions; it modulates neurogenic inflammation by inhibiting the release of substance P and pro-inflammatory cytokines like IL-1β, TNF-α, and IL-8; and it enhances innate immunity by acting as an agonist for Toll-like receptors (TLR2, TLR4, and TLR5), which induces the production of antimicrobial peptides. Clinical studies have demonstrated its effectiveness in reducing pruritus, xerosis, and inflammation in patients with atopic dermatitis and sensitive skin.
