Overview
Aquasept is a topical antimicrobial formulation consisting of a proprietary blend of essential oils, primarily developed for the decolonization of methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA). Developed by researchers at the Christie Hospital NHS Trust, it was evaluated as a natural alternative to standard chemical decolonization regimens (such as chlorhexidine and mupirocin) in surgical oncology patients. The mechanism of action involves the synergistic antimicrobial properties of its constituent essential oils, which disrupt bacterial cell membranes and inhibit respiratory enzymes. A Phase 2 randomized controlled trial was initiated to assess its efficacy in MRSA clearance and the reduction of postoperative infections, but the study was terminated prematurely due to recruitment challenges.
