Overview

Aquavrid is a biosimilar version of aflibercept, a recombinant fusion protein that functions as a soluble decoy receptor for vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF). Developed by Vridhi Biopharma, it is designed to treat various retinal vascular disorders characterized by pathological angiogenesis and increased vascular permeability. The molecule consists of the extracellular domains of human VEGF receptors 1 and 2 fused to the Fc portion of human IgG1. By binding to VEGF-A and placental growth factor (PlGF) with high affinity, Aquavrid prevents these ligands from activating their endogenous receptors on vascular endothelial cells. This inhibition reduces the growth of abnormal blood vessels in the retina and decreases fluid leakage, thereby preserving or improving visual acuity in patients with conditions such as neovascular (wet) age-related macular degeneration (nAMD), diabetic macular edema (DME), and macular edema following retinal vein occlusion (RVO).
