Aqueous cream is a topical emollient and moisturizer used primarily to treat dry skin conditions such as eczema, dermatitis, psoriasis, and general skin irritation. It is a non-greasy oil-in-water emulsion composed mainly of white soft paraffin (15% w/w), liquid paraffin (6% w/w), emulsifying waxes (often containing sodium lauryl sulfate/SLS unless SLS-free), water, and preservatives like phenoxyethanol or chlorocresol[3][7][4]. The mechanism of action involves forming an occlusive barrier on the skin surface that traps moisture and reduces transepidermal water loss[4][8]. This helps restore hydration to the stratum corneum. Some formulations contain SLS which can cause local irritation or contact dermatitis in sensitive individuals or those with eczema; SLS-free versions are available for these populations[1][5][4]. The product can also be used as a soap substitute for cleansing without drying out the skin. It is available over-the-counter in many countries.
